Les Vacances is thus an extraordinarily paradoxical film. Its easily accessible humour made it a children’s classic almost immediately; the film soon began a long and still-continuing career as a staple treat for French-language learners abroad (a considerable irony, considering the place that language holds in the film). Yet much of the film consists not of comedy gags, but of atmosphere, constructed by superbly crafted and subtle image- and sound-editing techniques. It has almost no story line, and despite its portrayal of boredom, it seems not to bore its audience at all. It appears to celebrate holidays by the sea, and yet it allows us to see just how trivial, pointless and depressing they are. And it presents a character that it is impossible to sum up or even to get to know or understand, yet whose name and silhouette instantly proved to have an almost universal appeal.
